The term Open and Distance Learning (ODL) refers to educational programmes that allow students to pursue their studies remotely, without the need for physical attendance at a traditional campus. ODL programs provide flexibility for students who may have other commitments such as work or family responsibilities. The University Grants Commission (UGC), in the context of promoting Higher Education and enhancing Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) launched Open and Distance Learning and Online Programmes through selected Universities/Institutions working for Higher Education. Contributing to social and economic development, Open and Distance Learning is fast becoming an accepted and indispensable part of the mainstream educational system. The main difference between the conventional and distance education is the mode of delivery. Open and Distance Learning mode means a mode of providing flexible learning opportunities by overcoming separation of teacher and learner using a variety of media, including print, electronic, online and occasional interactive face-to-face meetings with the learners. There are Learner Support Services to deliver teaching-learning experiences, including practical and face to face counselling. ODL emphasizes flexibility and broader accessibility, often with more affordable options. Evaluation is mostly through Pen and Paper type of exams.
“Online Mode” means a mode of providing flexible learning opportunity by overcoming separation of teacher and learner using internet, e-Learning Materials and full-fledged programme delivery through the internet using technology assisted mechanism and resources. These are academic programs offered entirely or primarily online, allowing students to complete coursework and interact with instructors and classmates virtually. Online learning is entirely digital, delivered through a learning Management System (LMS) and requires more active internet use and comfort with technology. Online courses are structured with virtual interaction and offer online exams.
